Ad attribution is the practice of assigning conversion credit to marketing touchpoints. It helps answer which channels, campaigns and ads were associated with purchases, leads, calls, demos, subscriptions or other outcomes.
Why attribution is hard
A buyer can discover a brand on one channel, return through another, switch devices, join an email sequence, talk to sales and convert days later. Each platform sees only part of that journey and may apply a different attribution window or identity method.
Attribution models
First-touch emphasizes discovery; last-touch emphasizes the final measurable interaction; multi-touch models distribute credit across several interactions. No model is neutral: the model changes the question your report answers.
Attribution vs incrementality
Attribution distributes observed credit. Incrementality asks what would have happened without the marketing exposure. Use the distinction to avoid treating attributed revenue as automatically causal revenue.
