UTM parameters are labels added to URLs so analytics and attribution systems can identify campaign context. The standard fields are source, medium, campaign, term and content.

A clean naming system

Use stable lowercase conventions, document allowed values and avoid putting personal information into URLs. A simple pattern such as source=meta, medium=paid-social, campaign=offer-name, content=creative-id is easier to govern than free-form naming.

UTMs are not identity

UTMs describe traffic context; they do not by themselves connect every later device, call or purchase to the same person. They are one component of a broader measurement stack.
